NRA Range Safety Officer

Every firing range in the country needs Range Safety Officers. These essential personnel ensure the safety of every person at the range. They enforce range regulations, work to prevent injuries, and ensure the range is a safe place for everyone. The RSO is responsible on the fireline to help shooters, ensure safety, and take where necessary to protect the range, staff, and shooters.

When a new shooter accidentally puts others at risk, the RSO steps in to stop and correct them. When a rifle jams, an RSO can help that shooter safely correct and resolve the issue. These are the Range’s official, with authority to halt firing, temporarily shut down the range, and supervise range operations.

This course is more difficult than our standard offerings. The responsibility and demands of the position require harder testing. Range Safety Officers are held to a standard akin to becoming a certified instructor. While the Range Safety Officer course can be completed in as little as 9 hours, it is often a longer course.

Students completing the course will receive an NRA Certification Card and may work or volunteer at most ranges nationwide as Range Safety Officers. This certification does expire and requires periodic renewal.
